Evolving research pratices : Case study in Francophone community
The fundamental role of eCollaboration between RTD actors such as researchers, experts, and organizations is to improve communication and reduce cost. The introduction of ICT into organisations provides opportunities and challenges. For example, EFRARD[1] portal Wiki represent a solution to this challenge, as it leads to new ways of interacting both with other organisations and also with individuals. Objectives of the EFRARD project are to stimulate more international collaboration and sharing of knowledge between RTD actors in all fields of RTD. These extend over the whole area of in Public Health research and innovation.
Note that wikis are social web sites enabling a flexible knowledge environment to a potentially large number of users. We can use wikis to create online communities that everyone can build together. A wiki provides a simplified interface; any user can edit the site content, including other user’s contributions. At any time, contributors can conveniently view the Web page as it looks to other subscribers, before and after the changes they have made. It is not necessary to know HTML (hypertext markup language) or perform work in HTML code; wiki also provides the ability to make extensive use of Hyperlink elements.
The best we can do? The main challenge is to introduce semantic technologies into wiki
Despite smashing success, wikis technologies suffer from a number of limitations including the following
(i) Automatically gather information scattered across multiple articles
(ii) Data structure is not represented adequately in a machine processable(semantic),
We believe that CERIF (Common European Research Informat) ontology which is used as an interface conceptualization management RTD tool for representing model and application-level semantics can improve the quality complex search and navigation functionalities to retrieve relevant information from the data repository search. In EFRARD we investigate the use of semantic web technologies to support and ease the lifecycle of the wiki.
[1] EFRARD is the acronym of the abbreviated French name: «Espace Francophone pour la Recherche, le Développement et l’Innovation» (in English this is: Francophone space for Research, Development and Innovation): http://www.efrardwiki.org/w/index.php?title=Accueil
